The Mattress Manufacturing Process:
Customer Spotlight | Silentnight

Silentnight is arguably one of the best-known brands in the UK and has a long and rich history dating back to just after the end of the Second World War. The company was established by Tom Clarke in 1946 in the North Yorkshire town of Skipton and was then known as ‘Clarke's Mattresses Ltd'. Its operations relocated to Barnoldswick in Lancashire in 1949 while its name was changed in 1951 to Silentnight.
#FUNFACT: The decision to change the name to Silentnight came from Tom Clarke’s wife, Joan. The business moved to its current premises ten years later and it extended its showroom in Salterforth in 1979.

The company's current brands include:
Silentnight
Rest Assured
Studio by Silentnight
Layezee
Pocket Spring Bed Company

It also has three locations across the Northwest of England with its headquarters at Long Ing Business Park in Barnoldswick, Lancashire, and a digital office in Quay Street, Manchester.

Customer Spotlight | Sealy UK (Part of the Silentnight group)

Winners of the ‘Best Product of the Year 2022-2023’ by the National Bed Federation Awards for their Posturepedic Elevate Ultra Turing Plush Mattress.
Sealy has laboured over their love of making mattresses for generations. They are not only proud of the way they do it, but how they do it, and that’s down to the people who make them who they are.

Without the skill and workmanship within the Sealy Sleep Team, who make every single mattress right here in the UK; Sealy wouldn’t be the tried, tested, and trusted sleep brand they are today.
Customer Spotlight | Hypnos

Hypnos is a British family-run mattress and bed manufacturer. Peter Keen, the Chairman, is the fourth generation to run the business, his son, James (Chief Executive Officer), and daughter, Sarah, are the fifth generation of Keens to help run the company on a day-to-day basis. In fact, Hypnos has been practising and perfecting the art of making luxury pocket spring mattresses and beds by hand since the Edwardian days. With over 100 years of bed-making experience and insight into a great night’s sleep, their philosophy and commitment focuses on sustainable designs, the pursuit of perfection and the delivery of a deep, energising night’s rest, helping to fulfil dreams of a healthy and enjoyable life.

Hypnos’ master craftsmen continue to use traditional and time-honoured skills that have been passed down from generation to generation. At Hypnos, they create authentic pieces of Great British Furniture - a sublime expression of extraordinary and lasting British workmanship.
Customer Spotlight | Harrison Spinks

Winners of the NBF - Bed Manufacturer of the Year Harrison Spinks reigns strong in the mattress and bed manufacturing industry. With over 100 years of experience, Harrison Spinks learned that if they were going to make a beautiful bed, they had to do it all themselves. Their beds don’t start out life in a factory but on a 300-acre farm in North Yorkshire. This is where they rear sheep for their wool and grow the fibres that go into the mattress fillings. They don’t do this because it is easier. It takes Harrison Spinks a year to grow the ingredients for one mattress. They do it because better ingredients make a better bed.

At their factory in Yorkshire, every mattress, divan, headboard, and bed frame are hand-made by skilled crafters. From upholstering each headboard to tailoring and hand-tufting all their mattresses, each bed in the factory is crafted to the customer's individual order. In tailor-making a Harrison bed, the most valuable tools are a set of hands. These are not just any hands. They belong to craftsmen like Andy Davis. In one week, Andy will hand stitch unique mattresses using a 12-inch needle and a lot of patience. After doing this for 25 years, he's got it down to a fine art. An art that a machine will never be able to master. These time-honoured techniques have often been passed from generation to generation, resulting in beautiful, bespoke beds that are of the highest quality and represent the bed in British manufacturing.
